I used to use those expanding plastic anchors that always come with things that you have to hang on the wall. When using them, I always thought there must be a better way, especially after that one time when I hung this shelf on the wall for my wife and after she loaded it up with some decoration, it pulled off the wall. When the shelf fell, it left four holes in the wall that needed to be patched and painted. The frustrating thing to me was that I used the included screws and wall anchors. No more of that since I discovered the Easy Anchors from Home Depot!

It makes me laugh at the things I see people try to attach to their walls. Almost more funny is how they try to do it. Notice I said try! I have patched more holes for people then I can track now, if only people would only do it right the first time. Wait, I am glad they do it wrong, because then they have to pay me to fix it!

Those twist and locks are cool. I am also a fan of toggle bolts when the weight is heavy enough - just don't overtighten as they'll pull right out of the drywall. I do agree, however, that catching a stud (at least one) is the best bet.

I had a nail in my wall that I swear was over 1/4" thick. It was apparently used to hang a VERY heavy picture or mirror before I bought the house. I would have destroyed the wall getting it out (even with a piece of lumbar to distribute the weight it was too tough) so I actually ground it off and punched it in a tad.
